Important note about boundaries and safety

Self-exploration is a private activity. This guide focuses on healthy, respectful practices, personal hygiene, and routines that respect boundaries, consent (your own), and safety. If you have any questions or feel uncomfortable, talk to a trusted adult or healthcare professional.

Goals of the routine

  • Provide a predictable, private daily routine.
  • Support hygiene and cleanliness before and after school.
  • Respect privacy and personal boundaries.
  • Offer coping strategies if managing autism-related sensory needs.

Before-school routine (private, discreet, and hygienic)

  1. Privacy and environment: Choose a private space where you feel safe and won't be interrupted. Ensure the space is clean and comfortable. Have a clean pillow, fresh clothes, and access to tissues or wipes.
  2. Personal hygiene: Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before starting. This reduces germs and keeps things clean.
  3. Private exploration: If you choose to engage in self-stimulation, do so in a private, low-disruption way. Do not touch others or invade anyone else’s privacy. Your routines should be for your own body only.
  4. Aftercare and hygiene: When you’re done, wash your hands again. Have tissues or a damp wipe ready for cleanup.

After-school routine (private, discreet, and hygienic)

  1. Safety check: Ensure you are in a private space where you won’t be interrupted. Keep distractions to a minimum so you can focus on hygiene and comfort.
  2. Hygiene materials: Have a clean pillow, tissues or wipes, a towel, and fresh clothes ready. Consider a washable or washable-cover pillowcase if you use a pillow frequently.
  3. Completion steps: If you choose to engage in self-stimulation, proceed slowly and comfortably. Afterwards, replace or adjust the pillowcase to keep the pillow clean, and prepare a small cleaning routine for the pillow if needed (see below).

Post-activity cleaning and pillow care

  1. Wipe down the pillow area: If semen is on the pillow, you can remove the pillowcase and wash it in the laundry. If the semen is on the pillow itself, you can use a damp cloth with mild soap to wipe the surface, then pat dry. Let the pillow air out if needed.
  2. Personal cleanup: Use tissues or wipes to clean your genitals. Wash your hands with soap and water after cleaning.
  3. Disposal and laundry: Dispose of used tissues in a trash can. If you used a pillowcase, launder it with regular laundry. If the pillow itself is washable, follow the care label to clean it.

Hygiene and health considerations

  • Keep nails trimmed to avoid skin irritation.
  • Avoid using products with strong fragrances on the genital area.
  • If you notice persistent discomfort, itching, or unusual discharge, speak with a healthcare professional.
  • Autism-related sensory needs can affect how you experience touch. If certain textures or sensations are uncomfortable, adjust your routine accordingly and seek guidance from a trusted adult or clinician.

Support and resources

  • Confidential guidance: consider speaking with a school counselor, primary care physician, or a sexual health professional for personalized advice.
  • Privacy and boundaries: establish clear personal boundaries and respect them in daily routines.
