What is ejaculation?

Ejaculation is when a little bit of fluid called semen comes out of the tip of the penis. Semen can contain tiny cells called sperm. Sperm are what the male body can make that, if they meet an egg from a female body, can help start making a baby. Saying this is just explaining how human bodies work — it is part of how reproduction happens.

Why does this happen?

This can happen during puberty. Puberty is the time when a child’s body begins to change into an adult body. For many people with penises, puberty starts somewhere between about 9 and 14 years old, but everyone is different. Some people will have ejaculation soon after puberty begins, and for others it may happen later.

How and when can it happen?

  • Sometimes ejaculation happens when the penis is touched or during sexual feelings. (It’s normal to have new feelings and curiosity, but keep in mind touch of private parts is something that should happen only in private and with safety and consent.)
  • It can also happen during sleep. That is called a "wet dream" or nocturnal emission. Wet dreams are normal and mean the body is changing as part of puberty.

What should I do if it happens?

  • It’s okay — it’s a normal part of growing up for many boys and people with penises.
  • If it happens in bed, you can change your sheets and wash yourself with soap and water. Keeping clean is good for comfort and health.
  • Remember this is private. It’s not something to show other people, and you should not share photos of private parts or ask others to share them.

Safety and boundaries

It’s important to know that touching private parts is private. If someone tries to touch your private parts, or asks you to touch theirs, that is not okay. Always tell a trusted adult (a parent, caregiver, teacher, school nurse, or doctor) right away. If you ever feel scared or unsafe, tell an adult you trust.

When to talk to someone or see a doctor

  • If you have pain, bleeding, or something that feels very wrong, tell a parent or see a doctor.
  • If you have questions, feel embarrassed, or are unsure about the changes in your body, it’s a good idea to talk with a parent, doctor, or another trusted adult. They can give honest answers and help you feel better.

If you want, you can write down your questions and bring them to a parent or doctor so you don’t forget to ask.
